Chemical pulp production is at the core of our biorefinery. Another main product is Arbron™, an innovative textile fiber. The growing population and the requirements for higher standard life have put loads of pressure to our environment. A significant growth of demand for ecological textile fibers thus can be estimated.
BioFutureFactory™ adds a new dimension to the Paltamo industrial entity. We are looking for partners to utilize the many benefits of the main operation – facilities, production side-streams, energy and environmental synergies, etc. – to develop and produce other new bioproducts from wood.
The new bioproducts will account for a significant part of the biorefinery’s total output, making Paltamo a landmark in its field. These highly refined innovative products that can be applied in different industries lay a solid foundation for investments.
The chemical pulping line is at the heart of the biorefinery and provides the base for all output. This process effectively separates the fibers in wood from other components. Northern chemical pulp in particular is highly appreciated and desired in the international market.
Side streams and by-products from the pulping process can be utilized for other purposes, e.g. production of turpentine and tall oil, as well as bioenergy. Most of the bioenergy is used internally by the plant, but significant amounts can be utilized in BioFutureFactory in the region or used as electricity in the national grid.
The main product to be sold in international market will be chemical pulp which is used internationally and mainly for the production of paper, tissue products and packaging materials. Other products that are directly derived from the pulping process include tall oil and turpentine.
Another main product of the Paltamo biorefinery is wood-refined Arbron™, a new type of intermediate raw material supplied to the textile fiber industry.KaiCell Fibers produces Arbron™ in a new method where, unlike in the traditional viscose production, carbon disulfide(CS2) is not used. This innovative method is developed in Finland.Viscose is by far the most widely used method for producing textile fibers from wood, with a world market of six million metric tonnes.
CS2 is toxic to human beings, harmful to environment, it smells and is highly flammable, and therefore, there is a clear need for substitute products that could avoid the usage of CS2. Most of the cellulosic textile fiber (typically viscose) needed by the textile industry is produced in Asia, especially in China. The Chinese textile industry alone represents a large market for envionmentally friendly textile fiber.
Due to global population growth and living standards improvements, a strong and significant rise in demand for innovative textiles can be expected over the next decades.
Cotton requires sufficient water and competition for arable land with food production, therefore, its growth prospects are limited.
Oil-based synthetic fibers, which make up two-thirds of the textile fiber market, have the drawback that they are gradually exhausting the fossil fuels.
Another major risk of synthetic fibers is the associated micro-particle problem, when washed, synthetic fibers give off micro-particles into non-biodegradable plastic particles that will contaminate the planet’s water supply and eventually enter the food chain.
Increased recycling rate is another, but limited, way of opening up new opportunity for natural fibers based on renewable raw materials.
In order to accelerate the development and market introduction of this breaking-new textile raw material, KaiCell Fibers has entred into close cooperation with the Chinese CHTC Group (China Hi-Tech Group Corporation).
CHTC Group (www.chtc.com) is a large diversified industrial group and one of the most influential companies in the textile industry, especially in the viscose industry (cellulose textile fibers). CHTC group has its own textile technology, engineering know-how and viscose production.
It is KaiCell Fibers’ long-term goal to convert all its local fiber wood into high value added products. With this in mind, an ecosystem for innovative product development is being formed in the biorefinery complex.
In the spirit of the industrial park concept, BioFutureFactory™ will provide raw materials and a complete infrastructure for innovative innovative companies and institutes, who will further process wood fibers and side streams from the main production line. The BioFutureFactory™ concept paves the way for developing numerous new bioproducts out of the biomass flows.
